The Park's Landscapes

Within the Park, the areas of greatest natural and cultural importance are:
  • the Gallipoli Cognato Forest, which extends over 4,200 hectares and is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna;
  • the Montepiano Forest, with majestic centuries-old Turkey oaks and a dense holly undergrowth;
  • the Lucanian Dolomites, with their rocky peaks, which popular tradition associates with legendary figures such as the Golden Eagle, the Great Mother, the Little Owl, and the Anvil.
At the top of the Dolomites lie the picturesque villages of Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, both listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, ideal places to discover traditions, authentic flavors, and breathtaking views.

Visiting the Park

The park service center is located in Palazzo di Accettura, along the provincial road connecting the Campomaggiore junction on the Basentana (SS 407) with the village of Accettura. Many guided hikes depart from here, and educational and recreational activities are organized, designed for school groups, families, and visitors curious to discover the beauty of the area.
