The Lucanian Dolomites

In the heart of Basilicata, the spectacular Lucanian Dolomites rise, a mountain range encompassing the municipalities of Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, both listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Their imposing, time-sculpted rocky silhouettes create a unique landscape, offering breathtaking views and thrills to nature lovers and hikers.

The origins of these mountains date back approximately 15 million years, to the Middle Miocene period, when the sandstones that now comprise their structure formed on the seabed. Over the millennia, wind, rain, and atmospheric agents have shaped the rocks, creating spires and pinnacles reminiscent of the Triveneto Dolomites.

The Lucanian Dolomites are characterized by jagged, steep peaks, with an average altitude between 1,000 and 1,100 meters above sea level. The most impressive mountain range is the Costa di San Martino, known as the "Little Dolomites," whose shape and charm recall the Alpine Dolomites. Among the most striking elevations are the Murge di Castelmezzano and the spires of Monte Carrozze.

Popular imagination has given some of these peaks evocative names such as the Golden Eagle, the Anvil, the Great Mother, and the Civetta, transforming the landscape into a place steeped in legend and symbolism. This natural environment, rich in biodiversity, is home to rare flora and fauna of great interest, making the area a true paradise for lovers of trekking, birdwatching, and nature photography.

Pietrapertosa and Castelmezzano: villages nestled among the rocks

On the slopes of the Lucanian Dolomites lie Pietrapertosa (1,090 m) and Castelmezzano (870 m), two picturesque villages that seem embraced by the mountains themselves. From here, you can admire spectacular views, explore hiking trails through gorges and forests, or enjoy unique experiences like the famous Flight of the Angel, which connects the two villages suspended in the air on steel cables.

Walking through the narrow streets of these villages immerses you in an authentic atmosphere, made of ancient stone, traditional flavors, and unforgettable views of the Lucanian Dolomites. A journey that combines adventure, culture, and relaxation in one of the most fascinating corners of Basilicata.
